On cold mornings, most Calgarians open up their garage halfway and start their vehicle to warm it up. Although it may seem like it would never happen to you, carbon monoxide poisoning happens far too often in the winter. Even when the garage door is open, exhaust fumes from vehicles can still pose a danger to our health.
On average, thanks to remote car starters, the average vehicle is left to idle for 15 minutes on cold mornings in unheated garages. This is more than enough time to accumulate an unhealthy and potentially deadly amount of exhaust fumes, which can also creep into your home.
Worst of all, idling a vehicle isn’t the most efficient way to warm it up. Most modern vehicles require less than ten minutes of idle time to be driven in colder temperatures. It’s a waste of fuel and your time!

Electric heaters cost less upfront as the installation isn’t as complicated, but it uses significantly more energy to heat up your garage compared to a natural gas heater. They’re less energy-efficient overall and do not generate the same number of BTU’s as a gas heater.
Throughout the winter, natural gas heaters generally save you more money than running an electric garage heater. In order to install a natural gas heater for your garage, you need to hook up your heater to a gas line. Installing a garage heater even to a new garage may seem straightforward, but if you don’t have an existing gas line, a new gas line will have to be installed.
Installing a new line is needed for both detached and attached garages. In order for new gas lines to get installed, trenching is needed. Trenching is digging a trench just big enough for your gas line to fit, and typically they have to be at least 18” below grade as per local code in Calgary.
Trenching is something you can do yourself with a trencher or other regular tools if you don’t mind the work. Some DIY’ers don’t mind projects like this. Just remember to call before you dig! If you accidentally hit an existing line for your natural gas BBQ or another natural gas appliance, you may damage it and run into problems.

Anything that has to deal with gas fitting, gas pipes, or gas services must be done by a licensed gas fitter. Gas permits are required to perform any local gas line installation and can only be acquired by licensed gas fitters.
After installation is complete, an inspection is required to be done by a city inspector to make sure that all the gas appliances and gas lines are installed properly, and there is no risk to the environment and to your home. They will perform a pressure test and do all of the necessary checks to ensure there is no risk to your home or family. Improper installation and dodging gas permits can lead to a devaluation of your home and could also make your home uninsurable by many insurance companies.
